Where is the discotheque? In its most popular incarnation, the discotheque was a place to go for Canadian band wallpaper and to get high on drugs. In more recent times it has developed more of a reputation as a trendy hangout. Some people say that the discotheque has been co-opted by punks. Perhaps this is why the once popular hangout is now one of the trendiest places in town.
So, what is there to do at the discotheque? Canadian rock bands perform there, but there are also several other popular acts who have graced its stages. My favourite bands to watch there are The Tragically Hip, The Roxy Wire, and Cactus Club. The Tragically Hip first opened for Ska at the discotheque in 1988 and went on to sell their way into the Canadian record industry. They still play there to this day.
Another popular band who first played at the discotheque is Cactus Club. Cactus Club is an American band who became famous playing set at the infamous discotheque. Cactus Club played their original song, Down in the Valley, there and they later performed it again at a sold out show at the Bell Light House in Montreal. Cactus Club was big fans of Canadian pop band The Tragically Hip and they continued to tour Canada and the United States with the band.
The Cactus Club were also set to play at the infamous Just for Lashes in New York. When they played there they were heckled some more by audience members. The band were also asked to open for the band Mottley Crue at the Bell Light House in Vancouver. A photo was taken of the crowd by a photographer and sent to the press.
The last popular band to perform at the infamous discotheque was the Bangles. The Bangles were starting to become well known in their own right and they were asked to open for The Rolling Stones at a show in Toronto. The Canadian rock band took to the stage just as they had on previous tours and they played some of their material from their self titled album.
So where is the discotheque located? It’s hard to say as it was a private club that was built a long time ago. In fact it hasn’t been featured on television or in movies since the seventies. The last time I saw the name mentioned on a tour of Canadian clubs was when the last supper group performed there.
In the meantime many people have taken to visiting the site in order to witness the unique music and dance performances. Some of the local performers are quite well known, while others have only gained a modest following. There is a distinct fusion of styles present at the discotheques of this area. If you’ve never been there before it can be an interesting experience to see the sets and scenes without having seen the original show. And once you’ve been there you’ll want to return again.
Many Canadian musicians like to perform there as well. They have their own discotheques, sometimes called stages, where they play their songs. Many other performers who you might not expect to see there include members of The Royal Philharmonic Society. You don’t need to be a member to attend this special occasion. In fact if you happen to know someone who is a member of the society you may wish them to attend one of the performances because you never know who might turn up!
There is also a stage set up on the premises that shows off some of the dancers and acrobats that can be found there. Some of the dancers make their own set of moves on the stage and you can see their performances on a screen behind the stage. There is a lighting system that produces beautiful color changing lights which are visible to the audience. Many of the exotic performances that you have seen put on in Toronto in the past are made possible by these types of lighting systems. It creates a very realistic set and audience experience.
Many people that visit the discotheque come just for the food and drink that are offered. There is a huge variety of bottled beverages, wines and mixed drinks. There is usually an open bar that anyone can walk up to and request a drink. This is not the case at most other bars and clubs.
When visiting the discotheque, it would be a good idea to bring your camera or a video camera. You will want to document the entire night and possibly take home some videos. If you have never seen a Canadian nightclub before, you might want to check out some videos online. You will be able to see how the discotheques set up and what goes on during the shows. It would be a great idea to attend some of the shows that are being performed. See for yourself how Canadian nightlife is truly created.
